Brooklyn & Avenue B – Intersection work

• Sundt Construction will start work at the intersection of Brooklyn & Avenue B as early as October 16, 2023 thru October 20, 2023
• Work includes replacing the raised median at the intersection with a rollover curb, and modifying another median to the south to create a better turning radius for fire engines
• This work will require a one day closure at the southern part of the intersection for either October 18th or 19th
• Avenue B southbound traffic will be detoured west on Brooklyn to St. Mary’s, then southeast on McCullough for one day or as needed
• Flagmen will be on site to facilitate traffic as needed
• All work is weather permitting, and the dates of the work may be extended due to unforeseen occurrences.

South Alamo Street & E. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. Intersection Closure

Beginning Monday, October 2, 2023, South Alamo Street will be closed to northbound and southbound traffic at E. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. through mid-November 2023. E. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. will remain open to westbound and eastbound traffic. Due to weather or unforeseen conditions the closure date may be extended. Work in the area will include drainage construction for the project.

The south side of E. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. will be closed for 3 weeks in phase 1, and traffic will be detoured and shifted to the north side, utilizing one lane in each direction. After phase 1 is completed, the north side of E. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. will be closed for 2 weeks in phase 2. The traffic will be detoured and shifted to the south side to complete the drainage construction on the north side of E. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. Signage will alert drivers of the detour routes.

Throughout the closures, pedestrians will have access along existing sidewalks and all businesses will remain accessible. See detour maps provided.

9th Street (Broadway to North Alamo) and 9th Street (Broadway ½ block west to Avenue B):

Has been rescheduled to start Friday, October 13, 2023

• A full road closure will start as early as Friday, October 13, 2023 thru early December 2023
• Broadway remains open to northbound and southbound traffic.
• Sundt construction will be working on CPS overhead to underground conversion, boring underneath Broadway at 9th Street, and installing a duct bank.
• West of Broadway will be closed up to Augie’s BBQ driveway on Ninth. The driveway will remain open. Augie’s BBQ new driveway on Broadway will be open, with two access points at all times.
• East of Broadway will be closed all the way to N. Alamo. The alley mid-block will be closed to traffic. Sidewalks will remain open. Grunt Style and New Western Acquisition will still have access to their driveways on Broadway Street.

Intersection of Broadway & Brooklyn Ave. to the Intersection of Broadway & 6th St. and McCullough Ave, to the intersection of Broadway & 4th St.: 

• Full road closure September 2023 thru December 2023 (McCullough Ave. will remain open to eastbound and westbound traffic throughout these closures)
• Pedestrians will have access along existing sidewalks on all sides, and a detour route will provide access to businesses and alternate routes throughout the closures.

Project Notes:

Contractor (Sundt Construction) continues reconstruction work on the South Alamo Street (Market Street to East Cesar E. Chavez Blvd.) project. To facilitate traffic, there will be at least one lane open in each direction for through traffic from Market Street to East Cesar E. Chavez Blvd.

Contractor Sundt Construction continues roadway reconstruction on the Broadway Corridor Lower Segment (E. Houston St. to IH-35) project, and bike lane work on the Avenue B and N. Alamo Bike Lane project.

• Broadway (Brooklyn to Roy Smith): Work includes westside roadway reconstruction, including curbs, sidewalks, driveway approaches, and pavers.
• Broadway (E. Jones to Roy Smith): CPS Duct Bank work completed. Westside roadway reconstruction, including curbs, sidewalks, driveway approaches, and pavers. Two-Way traffic northbound and southbound is opened, and will be maintained while working on the west side of the roadway.
• AT&T work throughout the corridor is completed.
• Avenue B, McCullough, and N. Alamo bike lanes: Miscellaneous work, clean-up work, and pressuring washing.
• All work is weather permitting, construction scheduling adjusted daily as needed by Sundt.

This work is associated with the $42 Million, 2017 Bond Project. Businesses and residents have sidewalk and parking lot accessibility. Bike lane work is in association with the Avenue B/North Alamo bike lanes. Access to local traffic and businesses will be maintained. Construction began Summer 2020 and will be substantially complete by Summer 2024. For ease of reference a list of road closures and detour route maps are provided.

Current and planned work:

• Installation of AT&T duct bank across S. Alamo at Nueva is to be completed by 9.21.23
• AT&T continuing copper splicing between Nueva and Cesar Chavez
• Continuing construction of CPS Vault; Sundt currently working on walls and deck
• Excavation and installation of chilled water between Nueva and La Villita west side of S. Alamo
• Installing Temporary Water System on east side of S. Alamo south of Nueva intersection

This work is associated with South Alamo (Market Street to East Cesar E. Chavez Blvd.) 2017 Bond Project. To facilitate traffic, there will be traffic control signage available to direct motorists. Businesses and residents will have sidewalk and driveway accessibility. Sidewalk closures are marked with signage for alternate routes. Public Works will continue to communicate any changes as the project progresses. Project construction began December 2022 and is anticipated to be substantially complete by Early 2025.

Broadway Corridor Lower Segment

(East Houston Street to IH-35) & Avenue B and North Alamo Bike Lanes

• AT&T work throughout the corridor is completed.
• Avenue B, McCullough, and N. Alamo bike lanes: Clean-up work, and pressuring washing.

• • Broadway West Side Intersections at 8th, 9th & 10th Street will be will be temporarily closed starting as early as the week of 4.17.23 thru 5.1.23 for roadway reconstruction, and asphalt paving.
  • Northbound, southbound, and eastbound traffic to remain open at all intersections.

Avenue B / McCullough / North Alamo Bike Lanes

• • Landscaping, signage installation, and roadway striping continues. Flagmen will be onsite as needed to help direct traffic at intersection areas, and roadways are opened to traffic.

Broadway Corridor Lower Segment (E. Houston St. to IH-35):

• • Sundt Construction continues roadway reconstruction on Broadway (Brooklyn to Roy Smith) thru August 2023. Two-way traffic north and south is opened to traffic, and will be maintained while working on the west side of the roadway. In addition, and concurrent with this work, the contractor will be working on Broadway (West Side Intersections at 8th, 9th & 10th Street), and will be will be temporarily closed starting as early as the week of 4.17.23 thru 5.1.23 for roadway reconstruction, and asphalt placement.
  • AT&T work continues throughout the corridor.
  • SAWS water main installation on Broadway (Peacock Alley Intersection to E. Houston) is completed, and opened to traffic.

Bike lane work is in association with the Avenue B/North Alamo bike lanes. Access to local traffic and businesses will be maintained.
